A George III Mahogany Longcase clock

A well constructed 8 Day Longcase clock with anchor escapement, phases of the moon, sub seconds and calendar. The Edinburgh styled mahogany case is accented by fluted columns and fruitwood inlays. The hands of gilded brass contrast a well preserved painted dial in original condition.  

The East Neuk fishing village of Pittenweem was one of Fife's busiest and most prosperous coastal communities. Its sheltered natural harbour supported a thriving fleet of fishing boats, while local merchants traded salted herring, grain, coal and timber with ports around the North Sea. The narrow wynds and crow-stepped houses clustered around the harbour reflected centuries of gradual growth, with many buildings serving both as family homes and places of trade. Although modest in size, Pittenweem enjoyed a reputation for skilled craftsmen, mariners and merchants, and its economy was closely tied to the fortunes of the sea. In the late eighteenth century, the village represented a prosperous Scottish burgh, where fishing, commerce and agriculture combined to create a vibrant and industrious community.
