Antique Scottish Clocks

Wm Lamb - Glasgow

A mid to late 19th Century eight-day rosewood bracket clock by William Lamb - Glasgow, who was listed as working in the city from 1855 to 1891.  In the typical style of many of the examples from London, and likely its origins beginning there, the mechanism is expertly made and entirely visible through the thick bevel glass panels. The 8 day fusee and chain mechanism is controlled by an Anchor escapement and complemented by a large brass London style Bob.

The case is veneered in exceptionally attractive rosewood, with the natural figuring of the timber particularly striking across the substantial stepped base. The architectural design incorporates a moulded and projecting cornice above the dial, giving the clock a strong and elegant presence.

The square dial is delicately engraved with foliate decoration to each corner, incorporating scrolling foliage and floral motifs. The silvered brass dial is complemented by bold black Roman numerals and a finely divided minute track, with elegant blued-steel hands providing a subtle contrast.  With its combination of richly figured rosewood, restrained architectural detailing and finely ornamented dial, this is an exceptionally attractive example of a Victorian library clock.
